Gabriela is a single mom raising two boys in East Hollywood. She works sun-up to sun-down, and still makes sure that her boys are safe & well taken care of. One of her biggest concerns has been getting her youngest son to school without him having to take public transportation. The thought of her 12-year-old son having to fend for himself each day on the bus while she is at work brings about extreme anxiety for Gabriela- understandably. Gabriela isn’t the only mom with these concerns. Many parents, families, and young people share fears about public transportation.
Los Angeles Metro is one of the largest transit systems in the country, and it is no stranger to violent crime, harassment, and safety concerns. Stabbings & shootings have left people injured or dead. A Metro Board Report found a 27.1% increase in crime on LA Metro Buses in 2025. There are also continuous reports of unwanted sexual behavior happening on buses & trains every day.
These aren’t just statistics- this is real stuff happening to real families & young people. Students describe stories of seeing people shot, being yelled at, and having to get off the bus and take a different one because someone was bothering them.
We cannot leave kids & teens to navigate public transportation and the streets of Los Angeles alone.
Safe, reliable transportation for Oasis kids & teens isn’t a luxury- it’s a breath of fresh air for parents. Every week, our team utilizes 3 buses, a 15-passenger van, a minivan, and a truck to pick Oasis children & teenagers up from school & home for Oasis programs. It provides protection, safety, and peace of mind. Right now, we are in need of a replacement for our oldest (27-year-old) Oasis shuttle. As the years go by, it becomes harder & harder to find parts to make repairs, and it’s getting more & more expensive to maintain it.
